Where do you all come from? I'm going to list some of the boards that I used to use that are gone now so gatekeeping is unnecessary.

>gatekeeping is unnecessary
it is in general now IMO.

young people dont care about ib culture.
even 4chan they post about how it's too boring and confusing to use.

spam raiders only want to flood/wipe for an hour or two, not occupy it forever.

tiny altchans are all dead or dying and they would do well to act more like decentralized boards than distinct sites with 2 users each becus MUST GATEKEEP

i found this site from wapchan BTW

congrats on getting the 1000th post on the site! and thanks for visiting :3
>they would do well to act more like decentralized boards than distinct sites with 2 users each becus MUST GATEKEEP
hmm, what do you mean by that? I actually really like that altchans typically are fairly distinct in culture and presentation (though I suppose the same could be said of boards on larger sites, to a lesser degree)

I generally agree with the other stuff you said - I think excessive gatekeeping is pretty silly at the tiny size of your typical altchan. "gatekeeping" is something that I kind of think can only happen properly once you have a somewhat established community and culture, and acts as a resistive force to sudden outside change. but a tiny slow site would probably be better served by focusing on building and growing, unless they're happy with their current state.

it's a balance between steering the community in the particular direction you want through gatekeeping and/or moderation (which can potentially stifle activity) and accepting outside influence or differing voices through a magnanimous "all are welcome" approach (which can potentially change the spirit or culture of the site in a negative way if you're not careful)

>hmm, what do you mean by that?
that ppl using site1, also make up the users of site2, site3, site4...
so it benefits no one to withhold site2 from new ppl who found one of the others, when they all share the same audience anyway (assuming they're the average general/anime chan)

even if 1 was highly niche or specific, it does no good to prevent a potential user from finding it. theyre mots likely to think "hmm, not for me" than to plot its destruction.

ppl should accept that having many sites is more like decentralization, becus chan culture is basically dead nd isnt going to grow to new heights ever again.
but even so, i think its still possible to maintain distinct cultures. i funpost on some boards, but wouldnt dream of doing so on others, because they have different expectations, even though im 100% sure the same ppl post on both.

thats how i see it at least

really I more meant that I was at a time in my life where I was depressed and impressionable and getting my shitty opinions from strangers on a black and green "hacker" style imageboard who seem like they know more on a topic than I do. I grew out of those websites and arisuchan died anyway

Uh I had my lainchan period in life as well but it was rather brief. At some point flaring fakery of their "meaningful" and "insightful" conversations got to my bones and I left. I still want to puke every time I remember average lainchan reply. Maybe it's just me though
