Revive the complacent world of candy by discussing and sharing your favorites - hidden gems or underappreciated classics, foreign or domestic, gummy, chocolate, or something else entirely, anything goes.

I have lamented before that it often feels as if all the big candy bars were invented decades ago and that innovation has greatly slowed down these days, especially in the chocolate bar world. One realization I had recently was that there are still people out there trying new things at a mass-production level - it's just that these ideas always get funneled into being a spin-off of an existing candy, for marketing purposes. For example, we're not getting new bite-size chocolate candies ala M&Ms, but we are regularly getting new "flavors" of M&Ms. I still think this is less delightful than an aisle full of products that feel truly distinct, but things could be worse.

You can always go to local candymakers for out-there flavors or ingredients (the quality will be much better too), but there are some unique candies that are probably only really feasible at mass-production scale. I'd love for both to succeed and continue making interesting new candy!

Hell, even bars that had their own name for many years (and still managed to hold their own in the candy aisle) are being bought up and rebranded as spin-off candies. The candy bar formerly known as "Take 5" is now "Reese's Take 5", complete with an orange-wrapper makeover. This makes the bar blend in with all the other Reese's variations on the shelf, and I honestly had no idea it was in there until I looked closer the other week.

Anyway, apparently picrel is the biggest upcoming candy launch, should be in stores Feb '25 - Reese's pieces bark. Would you try it?

>Candy is crack.
Well, I don't think it's that addictive, or destructive. I do think excessive sugar consumption is probably the single biggest dietary hazard for most people. But I made this thread under the assumption of responsible consumption (´・ω・`)
Once a week sounds totally achievable and reasonable if that's what you want to go for.

I love black licorice! well, some types can be a bit cloying. but I love "salty" (ammonium chloride) black licorice. I've tried a bunch of brands but I think venco is my favorite so far, which is nice, since it's easier to come by than a lot of the other ones I've tried

do you have any fun or cozy things you like to do to celebrate this time of year?

No, I hate Christmas. Everything balances out so the forced illusions of joy and cheer create suffering. Celebration should be spontaneous.

I think you're right about volunteering. I think that's what I need to be doing right now. Thank you for that. You also indirectly made me realize that Christmas is as much about giving other people joy as it is about having joy given to you. As much as I would want to be the giver, I need to realize that I need joy as much as everyone else does.
For everyone else, the Advent season is about over and Christmas proper is almost here. I hope you can find some real reprieve this week. May good tidings come over you all.

Christmas is a very melancholic time for me. I don’t know how to describe it, I used to start feeling really sad around Christmas but as I grew older i started to feel more nostalgic, and just a feeling of something being missing. Always loved christmas other than that. As a kid I always got something super cool on christmas, like a game console or new game. Now I try and celebrate as much as I can whenever I’m not busy with work or now admining

 No.294

>Celebration should be spontaneous.
Spontaneous celebration is nice, but it can't be as grand or as universal. And without organized, pre-planned celebration, many people will simply never make time to relax or rejoice. Consider also the way that yearly celebrations bring together a community and raise its spirits in a unique, collective way.

>>290
I can relate to this sentiment. Christmas was also huge for me as a kid, the thrill and surprise of presents made it the most special day of the year for sure. I guess I haven't felt a lot of nostalgia for that specifically, because I know it's normal and healthy to grow out of, but I do miss the excitement and fun I felt around that time of year. I never get through a Christmas season without some level of gloom about how I don't feel cheerful, or how I still haven't ended up where I wanted to be at the start of the year. I'd like to start some new Christmas traditions and celebrations with friends, but it can be very hard to get these things off the ground.

People throw around the term "terminally online" a lot as an insult, but it kinda sounds like a term out of a cyberpunk novel that's used to talk about the cool people who are deep into the futuristic matrix-surfing subculture

Being chronically online and brainrotted isn't cool.

 No.264

Alot of the people I have met that spend exorbitant amounts of time on the internet are either people who are incredibly passionate about something and use this modern plain of existence to pursue that thing further
OR
They have incredibly distressing or depressing lives and they use the internet as a form of escape and or a coping mechanism so that they can perform their societal duties without having a mental breakdown.
I fluctuate between these two positions myself.

I think ultimately you can boil the whole cyberpunk genre down to a simple form that can be expanded upon;
"What happens when a piece of technology comes into being, and how does it interact/affect human nature?"
>>27
Is pretty on the money. We are already living in the cyberpunk age, just without consumer cybernetics.

>"What happens when a piece of technology comes into being, and how does it interact/affect human nature?"
To me, this sounds like more of a broad description of sci-fi as a whole (though some types of sci-fi, like extraterrestrial encounters, might not strictly fall within it).
I think a work definitely needs more than just that to be readily classified as "cyberpunk", personally.

 No.274

I would not agree that cyberpunk as a genre can be boiled down to that.
Cyberpunk less about the future tech concepts themselves and more about the tension between our increasing dependence on technology and the giant, broken, greedy system(s) that both creates and utilizes said technology. that's where the whole concept of robo-limbs n whatnot come from, what if you had to depend on a consumer electronics corporation like Apple to keep your ability to walk? Or to see or to pump blood throughout your body? What if you had to depend on the same giant evil corporations that planned the obsolesce of your phone to just exist every day?

this is what people mean by us already living in the cyberpunk future btw

>What if you had to depend on the same giant evil corporations that planned the obsolesce of your phone to just exist every day?
I think a lot about how a bionic eye company from the early 00s went under, and the people who had the hardware in them were left up a fucking creek with 20 year old undocumented tech that will be basically useless and stuck in them since there's no support anymore.

felt weird too, because I remembered reading about the tech way back then and seeing all this promise for it

actually, the predominant stereotype is that ramen (especially fattier, pork-heavy styles) is "men's food". perhaps epitomized by the culture around "jiro ramen", a chain of shops serving an over-the-top style (picrel) alongside gatekeeping rituals like making you call out a series of modifications to your order in a specific sort of code known as a "call".

anyway, it isn't exactly known for being approachable for women. also, loads of ramen shops will have a "women's bowl" that's basically similar to a kids' menu option. I don't think it's really a sexism unique to ramen though, just your usual japan shit

 No.251

You want to make me get the ramen at my local Chinese noodle bar which is better than nothing
